Capital Department, Salta

The Departamento Capital is located in the center of the province of Salta in northwestern Argentina and is one of 23 administrative units in the province.

It is bordered to the north by the department of La Caldera, in the northeast and east by the Department of General Güemes, to the south by the departments Metán and Guachipas and to the west by the departments Chicoana, Cerrillos and Rosario de Lerma.

The capital of the department is Salta.

Population

According to estimates by the INDEC, the population increased from 472 971 inhabitants (2001) to 554 125 inhabitants in 2005.
