Capital District Islanders

The Capital District Islanders were an American ice hockey franchise in the American Hockey League from Troy, New York. The venue for the Islanders was the Houston Field House.

History

The Capital District Islanders were founded in 1990 as a franchise of the American Hockey League. Since the International Hockey League in the Great Lakes region continues to spread and became a strong competitor for the AHL, decided the league to settle a second franchise in the region, prompting the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League, the possibility received, a private farm team in Troy, New York, to settle, which is why they discontinued the cooperation with the reigning Calder Cup champion Springfield Indians.

After the Islanders in their first season, yet missed the playoffs, they reached in the seasons 1991/92 and 1992/93 respectively, the first playoff round, where they were subject to the Springfield Indians and the Adirondack Red Wings. In 1993, the owner sold the Capital District Islanders, Michael Cantanucci the franchise to the entrepreneur Albert Lawrence, who the team to Albany, New York, relocated, where it has since then played under the name Albany River Rats in the AHL.
