Capital District (Venezuela)

The Distrito Capital is the capital district of Venezuela. It has an area of 433 km2 and consists of only the municipality of Libertador. This includes about one- fifth of the surface or a third of the inhabitants of the capital, Caracas. As a nationwide immediate area it is the seat of the National Assembly and other federal authorities. It is bordered by the states of Vargas and Miranda.

With the Bolivarian Constitution of 1999, the Distrito Capital lost its own parliament and its governor. For the urban area Caracas ' (Distrito Metropolitano de Caracas ) was restructured. The city took over the government authority over the Federal District and four adjacent municipios of the state of Miranda. On 13 April 2009, the National Assembly passed a law on the creation of a new district government. The governor of the Distrito Capital has since been appointed by the President. Since April 14, 2009 Jacqueline Faria Pineda has held this position.
