Capitol Hill

Capitol Hill is the largest historic residential neighborhood in Washington DC Along broad avenues, it extends east front of the United States Capitol. It is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Washington and with about 35,000 inhabitants on nearly two square miles also one of the dichbesiedeltsten. The main shopping street in Capitol Hill is Pennsylvania Avenue, a lively street with shops, restaurants and bars.

History

When Pierre L' Enfant in 1791 began to develop his plan for the new federal capital, he decided the future building of Congress ( " Congress House " ) to build on the top of the hill overlooking the city - a place that L' Enfant as a " platform " described, " waiting for a monument ." L' Enfant called those hills as " Jenkins Hill " or " Jenkins Heights "; the piece of land was for a long time owned by the Carroll family and was listed as " New Troy " in their title deeds.
