Capodimonte, Lazio

Capodimonte is an Italian commune in the province of Viterbo, Lazio 1716 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) on Lake Bolsena.

Geography

Capodimonte is located 103 km northwest of Rome and 26 km north-west of Viterbo. The medieval town center is situated at an altitude of 334 m on a promontory 150 meters above the water level of the former volcanic lake. Belongs to this community the Isola Bisentina. Capodimonte with his two-kilometer promenade along the black volcanic sand beach in summer is a popular recreation destination for Romans.

The neighboring municipalities are Bolsena, Capranica, Latera, Marta, Montefiscone, Piansano, San Lorenzo Nuovo, Tuscania and Valentano.

Traffic

Capodimonte is located between the state road SS 2 Cassia, which connects Rome and Florence and the state road SS 312 Via Castrense that leads to the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The nearest train station is in Montefiascone.

History

The foundation of the city dates back to the Etruscans.

Policy

Mario Fanelli (PD ) was elected in June 2009 for the mayor. His center-left list, also with 8 of 12 seats, the majority in the City Council. He replaced Giuseppe Micarelli ( center-right list), who did not run.

Attractions

The village was built around the octagonal fortress " Rocca Farnese ", the Borghese Palace and the Collegiate. The fortress was da Sangallo designed in the 16th century by Antonio the Younger.

Personalities

Giulia Farnese, sister of Paul III. ( Alessandro Farnese) and one of the mistresses of the Borgia Pope Alexander VI. , Was born in 1474 in Capodimonte or Canino and spent her youth in the " Rocca Farnese " in Capodimonte, before she moved as a 14- year-old in the Vatican.
