Capolago
Capolago was until April 4, 2009, a municipality in the district of Riva San Vitale, in the district of Mendrisio in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland.
On 25 November 2007, the merger of the municipalities Arzo, Capolago, Genestrerio, Mendrisio, Rancate and Tremona was approved by the voters. They have joined together by April 5, 2009 the new church Mendrisio.
Geography
The village lies at the end of an arm of Lake Lugano. ( Hence the name " Capo Lake "). From the Railway station on the Gotthard line the Monte Generoso Railway runs to the summit of Monte Generoso mountain house is located at the foot of the place. Near Capolago is Riva San Vitale.
History
The castle, built in 1365 was destroyed by the Confederates in 1517. The village church of Santa Maria Maddalena dates from the 14th century and was rebuilt in the 16th century.
