Capped White-eye

The Arfak White-eye ( Zosterops fuscicapilla ) is a species of bird in the family of white-eyes. There are two subspecies: the nominate form Zosterops fuscicapilla fuscicapilla and the breed Zosterops fuscicapilla crookshanki.

Description

The Arfak Brillenvogel reached a size 9.5 to 11 centimeters and a weight of 10.8 grams. In the male of the nominate Zosterops fuscicapilla fuscicapilla forehead, reins and bridle line are black under the eye ring. A black hood pulls up on the back of the head, contrasting with the green neck. The rather narrow white eye-ring is interrupted by a front black spots. The top is dark yellowish olive green. The rump is yellowish. The wing tips and tail are dark brown. Throat and underside are yellowish olive green. The belly center, and the under tail-coverts show an almost pure lemon yellow color. The iris is reddish brown to dark brown. The beak is dark gray to blackish with a light gray lower mandible base. The legs are gray. The female resembles the male. However, it is average duller colored and less yellowish. The juvenile birds the beak is orange and the flanks bright yellow. The blackening of the face is missing. The breed Zosterops fuscicapilla crookshanki is strikingly different from the nominate form. The top of the head is olive green. The reins are narrowing to a black stain. The eye-ring is on. The underside is yellowish tinted less. The coverts are greenish.

Habitat and behavior

The Arfak White-eye is restricted to rain forests at altitudes 1200-2100 m. Occasionally he takes walks to nearby roadsides, villages and farmland. The Arfak Brillenvogel inhabited in small groups, the forest areas of the canopy to the forest edge. Its food consists of small fruits and insects.
