Cappel, Lower Saxony

Cappel is a member community of the Lower Saxon Samtgemeinde Wursten in the landscape Wursten in the district of Cuxhaven.

Cappel is located north of the North Sea resort Dorum within view of the North Sea coast. Through the community's railroad Bremerhaven - Cuxhaven runs.

The community Cappel will form 1 January 2015 together with the communities Dorum, Midlum, Misselwarden, Mulsum, North Wood, Padingbüttel and Wremen the new community Wurster North Sea coast in the district of Cuxhaven. The Samtgemeinde Wursten is dissolved by the same date.

History

Name

The Peter and Paul Church was founded in 1198 by Cistercian monks Cappel. The name refers to the church - or chapel - and means " at the chapel in the Church." 1483 the old designation to the Cappel was called.

In the list of monuments in Cappel (Lower Saxony) are registered in the list of monuments of the country district Cuxhaven monuments.

Structures

The St. Peter and Paul's Church stands on a Kirchenwurt of the 13th century in the town center. Built in the 15th century church tower of the 12th- century chapel was also used as a landmark for ships in the mouth of the Weser to the North Sea. To this end, the tower of the church was wearing white rings. The church building was destroyed in December 1810 by fire and rebuilt in the following years.

The organ of the St. Peter and Paul's Church was built in 1679/80 by the famous organ builder Arp Schnitger and is still used for concerts by international artists. She comes from the monastery church of St. John in Hamburg and was transferred to the fire destruction of the original organ 1816 Cappel. It has 30 stops on two manuals and pedal and is considered one of the best preserved Schnitger organs (→ see main article: Organ of St. Peter and Paul Church ( Cappel ) ).
