Căpriana monastery

The Monastery is a monastery in Căpriana Căpriana, Rajon Străşeni, Moldova. It is located about 40 km north- west of Chisinau.

History

The first mention of the monastery Căpriana took place in 1429 in a document of the Moldovan prince Alexander the Good. Originally built of wood, it was a few decades later under the reign of Stephen the Great, a stone church. In subsequent years, the monastery fell into disrepair until the Voivode Peter IV Rareş it was again built in the years 1542-1545.

During the Russian rule over Moldavia, the building complex was expanded with the construction of the winter church again in 1903. In Soviet times, closed for decades, the monastery between 2003 and 2005 was extensively renovated.

Others

Because of its great cultural importance for Moldova, the monastery Căpriana serves as a motif for the back of the 1- Leu banknotes.
