Captain Sensible

Captain Sensible ( born April 24, 1954 in London; actually Ray Burns) is a British singer, guitarist, bassist, lyricist and composer.

Biography

Burns first played in various bands, as in Johnny Moped. In 1976, he joined as bassist for the punk rock band The Damned, which was founded by Brian James. On the bus ride to Mont -de- Marsan Punk Festival in southern France, he was provided by Sean Tyla ( Ducks Deluxe) with the pseudonym Captain Sensible. The name stuck.

After a brief breakup of the band and his own projects (King instead of the favored group Sensible Queen) The Damned came together again. Sensible wrote most of the songs for the album Machine Gun Etiquette, which must be regarded as a classic of melodic punk rock, and excelled as a guitarist, with his preference was obviously for the psychedelia of the early Pink Floyd to Syd Barrett and Jimi Hendrix.

Parallel to The Damned Sensible launched his solo career, he had written songs, which saw the group as to poplastig. These he took himself to A & M Records and was an immediate success. With classic pop music, a rebellious and self-confident image and a red Basque hat / beret as a trademark, he landed several hits from 1982 to 1984, he wrote alone or with Robyn Hitchcock (Soft Boys). His debut single Happy Talk occupied in July 1982 in the UK charts for two weeks at No. 1 His biggest hit in Germany was the rap single Wot, the beginning of 1983 climbed to # 4 on the singles chart.

After his contract with A & M Records, he released records on his own independent label " Deltic Records" and on the label of Henry Rollins " Humbug Records " in the United States. He also worked among others with Martin Newell ( Cleaners from Venus ) on new songs. In April and May 1996 Sensible went with The Punk Floyd for the first time on big tour of Germany. Since 1997, he is again a member of The Damned.

Captain Sensible lives in Brighton.
