A trash compactor is usually a hydraulically operated machine that is used to reduce the volume of scrap metal for better transport. Preference is disused, already of all plastics etc. freed cars that are pressed together in scrap presses under high pressure of up to 20 MN to reduce the costs for further transport.

The old or vehicles involved are pressed usually parallelepipeds, whereby they can be loaded better and take up less space. These cuboids are often problematic in further processing, because then non-ferrous metals ( eg copper) difficult to separate from the scrap iron, which leads to substantial loss in quality of the steel when re- melting.

The crusher is the alternative to shredding ripping the cars into small pieces of metal.

The world's largest scrap press is in Eltersdorf, Erlangen, where daily up to 1000 tons of scrap metal to be pressed into compact blocks. The whole complex is on Sundays and public holidays released to the public.
