Car glass

As auto glass is called glass used for windshields, rear and side windows of automobiles.

  • 4.1 (ESG )
  • 4.2 laminated safety glass (LSG )

History

The first automobiles were built open. The driver and passengers were sitting unprotected in the vehicles. Later they assembled only a windshield to the front of the car to protect the driver and passengers before flying with the air flow precipitation, insects and dirt particles. We used simple flat glass in case of breakage could cause serious injury. With the transition to the closed cabins ( first only for passengers) built the manufacturer then the side window.

The Rumpler Tropfenwagen (1921-1925) was the first automobile, had the arched glass panes.

Production

Stages of development in the automotive glass production. By 1900, clear transparent, fire bare window glass was produced exclusively in Mundblasverfahren. 1905 succeeded the Belgian Fourcault for the first time, immediately draw a glass panel from the glass melt. In 1917, the Americans Colburn with the support of Libbey -Owens -Gesellschaft another drawing process. 1928 combines the company Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company the benefits of Fourcault method with those of the Libbey- Owens- process.

It was followed by the development of continuous grinding processes of large-area glass panels.

End of the 50s it was the idea of the Englishman Pilkington, who made the glass making to economic conditions possible. The liquid glass ribbon, namely passed over an ideal flat surface, a metal bath. The glass floats as an endless belt on a gas film between metal and glass surface; it is conducted in the solidification phase on a roller belt through a seemingly endless cooling channel.

Performance of a modern float glass plant: up to 3000 m2 / h and up to 800 tons per day.

Designs

  • One piece straight slices
  • Especially, in the middle split panes
  • Curved washers.

Installation forms

Until the early 1990s, the front and rear windows were fed with gums. Then continued as a result of vehicle stability and the introduction of airbags bonding of the glass by. Today windshields are supporting body parts that have a significant contribution to the body stiffness.

Safety glass

(ESG )

First, proper safety glass hardened and thereby prestressed discs were put on the market in the production of tempered safety glass. This decay at break into many small pieces. Although the edges of the glass fragments remain sharp, but the fragments are so small that they can not cause deep hurts more. Today, they are used mainly for side and rear windows.

Laminated safety glass (LSG )

Later appeared the laminated safety glass, the two glass layers are connected by a film. The laminated safety glass is used predominantly for windshields.

Accessories

Auto glass and can often be extended over the following accessories.

  • Color: white, blue, bronze or green, with blue, green or gray sun protection stripes
  • Equipped with Window Tint: reduces the UV radiation in the interior of the car, reducing the amount of heat radiation on the windshield.
  • Alternatively, there is also heat resistant glass: here, an adherent film is formed on the inner side of the first disc with a metallic substance applied. Due to this property, the heat radiation can be reflected.
  • Heated
  • Equipped with Antenna for the Car Radio
  • Equipped with sensors: react in rain, light and humidity
  • Self-cleaning and water -repellent
  • HUD ( Head Up Display ): projects driving information such as speed, navigation instructions and control displays on the windshield

Functions

The windshield is now not only a useful addition to the car, but has become a major design element. Is another important part of the bonded windshield, the windshield contributes to the rigidity of the body. The airbag on the passenger side relies upon opening from the inside against the windshield off, it must therefore bear the burden thus created.

Rockfalls

Stone chips in laminated glass can often be repaired. In many modern auto glass repair shops will repair that lasts about 30 minutes, as a rule, carried out with a highly transparent resin which fills the damaged area and then cured with UV light. The strength of the glass becomes nearly restored, and the disk does not need to be replaced costly.

Technical prerequisites for this are: size in diameter including cracks not more than 3 cm, size of the damaged surface is not more than 5 mm, there may be no dirt or moisture gets into the damaged area, and the cracks may not end at the wafer edge. A further condition according to traffic regulations: stone chips in the "driver's field of vision remote " must not be repaired because the optics can not be restored to 100 %. The "driver's field of vision remote " describes the legislature as follows: In the center above the steering wheel 29 cm wide, up and down as far ranging the wiper blade.
