Caracas Cathedral

The Cathedral of Caracas is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Caracas.

The cathedral was begun in 1666 by Juan de Medina, to replace a smaller church on the site, which was destroyed in an earthquake in 1641. Construction of the cathedral was completed in 1674. The facade from 1771 is a work of Francisco de Andrés Meneses. After the earthquake of 1812 in Caracas, one of the steeples was damaged and later reduced in size. In 1932 and in the 1960s, the church building was extensively restored and modified. In the church building houses the mortal remains of the parents and wife of Simon Bolivar.
