Carahue on the map of Chile

Carahue is a town and municipality of the same name in Chile in the province of Cautín in the Región de la Araucanía in the south of the South American Andean state.

It belongs alongside the communities of Nueva Imperial, Saavedra, Cholchol, Teodoro Schmidt, Freire and Pitrufquén the constituency N ° 51 and belongs to 15 ª County ( Araucanía Sur ).

Area

History

The old Imperial (1551 - 1600)

The city was originally founded by Pedro de Valdivia under the name " La Imperial" in 1551 on a hill overlooking the Imperial River. Since the city was surrounded by settlements of the Mapuche, she was exposed to the constant attacks by the militant indigenous people. Because of the fighting, the city was finally evacuated and left in 1600.

Carahue ( since 1882 to date)

After the peace agreement with the Mapuche, the city was founded again in 1882 by the General Gregorio Urrutia. The name he chose the term " Carahue " ("Where previously was a place " ) from the language of the Mapuche to the old Imperial city to remember. The aim of the foundation was the establishment of an inland port and export center. The port fell sharply due to the impact of the earthquake in 1960 in importance.

Bishopric of Imperial

The Diocese of Imperial was founded on the instructions of Pope Pius IV on March 22, 1564 as the second diocese in the country. In 1600, the Episcopal seat but was evacuated with the rest of the city. Years later came the Franciscan monks 1840-1851 in the region to evangelize to. When they found the ruins of the episcopal seat of Imperial, they built a new church on the same spot, which was completed in 1931. Museum of the steam age

Suspension bridge Eduardo Frei Montalva

Railway Museum
