Caranavi Province

Caranavi is one of twenty provinces in the eastern part of the Bolivian department of La Paz

Location

The province is located on the Bolivian Altiplano east of Lake Titicaca at the headwaters of the Río Beni and is bordered to the northwest by the province Larecaja, on the southwest by the province of Murillo, on the south by the province of Nor Yungas, and to the east and northeast of the province of Sud Yungas.

The province extends between about 15 ° 20 'and 16 ° 03' south latitude and 67 ° 07 ' and 67 ° 42 ' west longitude, it measures 75 km from north to south, from east to west 55 km.

Population

The population of the province Caranavi has risen in the past two decades by about 40 percent:

40.6 % of the population are younger than 15 years. (1992)

The literacy rate in the province is 83.1 %. (1992)

92.7 % of the population speak Spanish, 71.6 % speak Aymara, Quechua and 11.1 %. (1992)

88.7 % of the population have no access to electricity, 65.6 % have no sanitary facilities (1992).

68.0 % of the population are Catholics, 22.9% are Protestants (1992).
