Carangas Province

Carangas is a province in the northern part of the Oruro Department in the South American Andes State of Bolivia.

Location

The Carangas province is one of sixteen provinces in the Oruro Department. It lies between 17 ° 59 'and 18 ° 54' south latitude and between 67 ° 09 ' and 67 ° 45 ' west longitude.

It is bounded on the northwest by the province of San Pedro de Totora, on the west by the province of Sajama, to the southwest by the province of Litoral, on the southeast by the Province Sud Carangas, on the east by the province Saucarí, and on the northeast by the province of Nor Carangas.

The province extends north to south over 105 kilometers in east-west direction over 75 kilometers.

The most important idiom of the province is Aymara, spoken by 94 percent of the population, Spanish ( 84 percent) and Quechua ( 13 percent). 43.1 percent of the population are younger than 15 years old.

92.5 percent of the population have no access to electricity, 98.1 percent have no sanitary facilities (1992).

79.8 percent of the working population is employed in agriculture, 0.1 percent in mining, 3.5 percent in industry, 16.6 percent in the service sector ( 2001).

72 percent of the population is Catholic, 23 percent are Protestant (1992).

The province is divided into the following two counties ( bolivian: municipios ):

  • Municipio Choquecota - 2,143 inhabitants (Update 2010)
  • Municipio Corque - 11,419 inhabitants
