Occupation

Caravanserei is an album by Santana, taken between 21 February and 5 May 1972, published in October 1972 on Columbia Records.

Genesis

Caravanserai was the fourth studio album by the band Santana. It marked a musical turning point after the first three albums by leaving the popular rock format of the previous albums. It also contained no hits; Rather, here, the prevailing focus on jazz -related instrumental passages with some experimental character. The Woodstock - cast was broken apart. While still Gregg Rolie and Neal played on this album with Schon, who founded the band Journey in the following year; particular Rolie had with the new compositions problems. On a piece of keyboardist Tom Coster therefore already played in the band, their music even better developed in the direction of jazz-rock in the subsequent album Welcome. Even Mike Shrieve, who produced the album with Carlos Santana, spoke in favor of this direction.

Clive Davis, the president of the record label Columbia, problematized against Carlos Santana, the direction of the album, which contained no songs on the radio format and predicted an end to the career of Santana. But Santana insisted to make this album so.

The album

The introductory title "Eternal Caravan of Reincarnation " develops in a similar dreamlike atmosphere as "Singing Winds, Crying Beasts " at Abraxas. His melody is strongly influenced by Astral Traveling, a piece of Pharoah Sanders' Thembi influenced album. "Eternal Caravan of Reincarnation " is a showcase for guitarist Neal Schon. In addition, saxophonist Hadley Caliman and Wendy Haas worked on Fender Rhodes with; the saxophone forms a sharp contrast to cicada -like sounds. The next song, " Waves Within", a jazz-rock instrumental, Carlos Santana's guitar is in the center.

The titles of the album alongside its own tracks include a cover of Brazilian standards Stone Flower by Antonio Carlos Jobim, to Carlos Santana and Michael Shrieve contributed to the English lyrics. Future Primitive by Chepito Areas and Mingo Lewis was surrounded by a sound surface, which included piano, vibraphone and cymbals, which contributed Michael Shrieve. The extensive All the Love in the Universe is a composition Carlos Santana; here two bassists are used over a complex rhythm carpet, which was understood by Santana's biographer Norman Weinstein as a sign of devotion to jazz. The short Just In Time To See The Sun, one of the few vocal numbers, serves as an introduction to the instrumental Song of the Wind, in which the lead guitar of the band leader is in the foreground. Look Up ( To See What's Coming Down ) is strongly influenced by the ensemble and radio - bonds. The Latin stressed La Fuente Del Ritmo is the prelude to the final number Every Step of the Way, composed by Michael Shrieve. This was derived Every Step Of The Way of the Miles Davis composition In a Silent Way. Hadley Caliman is used here as a flautist and plays his solo with an intensity reminiscent of Jeremy Steig. Tom Harrell put together an orchestra and wrote a package that contains references to Las Vegas Tango by Gil Evans and Sketches of Spain by Miles Davis.

Simultaneously, the album marks the turning Santana to Indian spirituality. Inside cover of the LP is a quote of the Guru Paramahansa Yogananda appeared from the Metaphysical Meditations:
