Carbachol is a drug from the group of parasympathomimetic and a structural analogue of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Instead of acetyl group is present, a carbamoyl group ( Carbam (O) ylcholin ) (i.e., resistance to hydrolysis ) gives the prodrug increased chemical stability. Thus, it is very poorly cleaved by the acetylcholinesterase and has a longer half-life than the therapeutically insignificant acetylcholine.
Carbachol mimics the activity of the parasympathetic nervous system by binding to the muscarinic receptor by ( directly effective parasympathomimetic ) and is used for example in ophthalmology ( eye care ) as an anti -glaucoma agents. It is applied topically in the form of eye drops, to reduce systemic side effects. Carbachol shows a preference for the therapeutically significant muscarinic acetylcholine receptors, the nicotinic subtype is poorly bound.
