Carbon Disclosure Project

The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) is a company incorporated in London in 2000, a non-profit organization with the goal that companies and municipalities publish their environmental data such as climate-damaging greenhouse gas emissions and water consumption. Once a year, the CDP collects on behalf of investors through standardized questionnaires on a voluntary basis data and information on CO2 emissions, climate risks and reduction objectives and strategies of companies. The CDP now manages the world's largest database of its kind

More than 655 institutional investors to support the project as so-called " Signatory Investors". Taken together, these investors manage assets of more than 78 trillion U.S. dollars and are thus in possession of most of the top-selling listed companies in the world. The CDP is independent and is funded by a wide range of sponsors, as well as through membership fees and as part of special projects and partnerships. The shared by the companies data and the CDP annual reports are available on the website of the CDP freely available to all users. The investors that support the CDP, will also get access to non-public information.

In total there are 31 samples, divided by countries, regions and sectors. The next CDP reports will be published in September 2010.

Using the data reported

Investors, corporations, policy makers, scientists and the media use the CDP data in order to obtain information about climate-related data and strategies of companies. Investors use this information, inter alia, to assess long-term opportunities and risks of their portfolio companies to determine their investment strategy for the development of investment products and indices as well as for submission of applications for annual general meetings and working directly with the Company's management. The reporting entity even use the data on the one hand for the comparison with the competition and the other hand to locate cost - saving potentials and to develop strategies for the control and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

CDP questionnaire

The questionnaire consists of four parts:

For the measurement of greenhouse gas emissions, entities are encouraged to orient themselves on the "Greenhouse Gas Protocol " and the ISO 14064 standard.

Dissemination of the CDP

The CDP is headquartered in London and other offices are located in New York, Dublin, Paris, Berlin, Sao Paulo, Stockholm and Tokyo. Overall, the CDP rises in about 60 countries data, the cooperation with partner organizations plays an important role. In 2009, a total of more than 2,400 companies have their greenhouse gas emissions to the CDP reported, including 82 % of the Global 500 companies. 2010, the request for information has been sent to approximately 7,000 companies.

CDP Germany

In Germany, the CDP has been active since 2006. In 2009, a total of 102 of the 200 largest publicly traded companies surveyed have participated in the climate data collection ( 51%). The DAX-listed companies are among the participants represented almost entirely ( 97%), in the other indices (MDAX, Nasdaq, H -DAX, SDAX ) is the participation rate is much lower. Strategic partner of the CDP in Germany are the auditing firm KPMG AG and WWF Germany. Since April 2009, the CDP is in Germany with its own office represented ( based in Berlin ).

CDP Rating

From the reported data, the CDP created for some samples the Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index ( CDLI ). It provides an overview of detail of the reporting. The CDLI 2008 comprised nominally each 30 companies with the highest ratings, divided into the categories of greenhouse gas -intensive industries and greenhouse gas - poor sectors. Since 2009, this distinction is no longer made and in the CDLI the best reporting companies are included, which release their information public and use the CDP Online Response System ".

The policies of the CDP contained 2009 for the first time a separate consideration of the performance. The quality of the entrepreneurial measures to respond to climate change is assessed based on the answers in the questionnaire. The best performing companies are the Carbon Performance Leadership Index ( CPLI ). The introduction of performance scores provides the ability to perceive progress of the company in dealing with climate change and to distinguish between good coverage and the planning and implementation of measures. In the future, the performance scores should be included in the CDLI.

More CDP projects

In 2007, the CDP began with the capture of greenhouse gas emissions that are caused in the entire value chain of participating companies ( CDP Supply Chain). Here, the indirect emissions from all stages of production from processing to packaging to be evaluated prior to transport. In addition, the CDP project be expanded in 2008 to working with governments (CDP Public Procurement) to achieve greater energy efficiency in government procurement. As part of the 2008 established cities project (CDP Cities ) have 30 U.S. cities obliged to collect information about greenhouse gas emissions and the opportunities and risks of climate change in their area of responsibility. 2010 data were also the first to be asked for water consumption of the world's largest companies (CDP Water Disclosure ).
