Carcass Iceland (Spanish: Isla del Rosario ) is one of the Falkland Islands. It is located northwest of West Falkland and south east of the Jason Islands. On the 304 m high island, find isolated sand dunes.

History

The island got its name from the captain of the HMS Carcass, who discovered the island in 1766. The neighboring islands were named Jason Islands, after the escort ship of the Carcass, HMS Jason. The captain of the Jason, John McBride, was also the most north-eastern point of the island its name, MacBride Head.

Carcass had been chosen as a possible landing point during the Falklands War, the amphibious operations however (English mostly San Carlos Water) were then carried out in the north- west of East Falkland in the San Carlos Bay.

The island has been inhabited for over 100 years. The only place on the island, Port Patterson, is known for its gardens.

The inhabitants of the island breed sheep.

Flora and Fauna

Since no cats and dogs were introduced on the island, the abundant bird life could be preserved. Night herons, sea lions and penguins are native to the island.

Typical of the island is Nassella trichotoma, a robust grass species. In the gardens of the island were, inter alia, Fuchsias, lupins and New Zealand palm trees planted.
