Cardiff Railway

The Cardiff Railway was a railway company in South Wales.

On June 25, 1886, the Bute Docks Company was founded. The company operated several routes in the Bute Docks, Cardiff. The Taff Vale Railway ( TVR ) was trying to take over the 1888 Bude Docks Company. This failed, however. 1896 took over the Bute Docks Company the Glamorganshire Canal and the Aberdare Canal. A merger with the Rhymney Railway failed. In 1897, a new headquarters for the company was formed with the Pierhead Building at Cardiff Bay.

On 6 August 1897, the company changed its name to Cardiff Railway. The Company had the right number of routes to the Port of Cardiff to build. However, it was built only the 10.5 km long railway line from Cardiff to Pontypridd, as the competition of the TVR prevented further expansion. The line was opened on 15 May 1909 and to freight on 1 March 1911, the passenger in operation.

On January 1, 1922, the Great Western Railway took over the company.
