Cardinal Domenico Ginnasi

Domenico Ginnasi (* 1551 in Castel Bolognese at Imola, † March 13, 1639 in Rome ) was a Cardinal of the Catholic Church.

Life

Ginnasi, third child of the physician Francesco Ginnasi and the nobles Caterina Pallantieri, studied in Bologna. 1572 he received his degree as Doctor of Laws. Ginnasi worked many years in the service of the Curia, and was in 1586 the Archbishop of Manfredonia, a post which he held until 1607.

From 1598 to 1600 he was apostolic nuncio in Tuscany, from 1600 to 1605 in Madrid. Pope Clement VIII appointed him on June 9, 1604 of the titular church of San Pancrazio cardinal. 1606 he moved to the titular church of Santi Apostoli XII. Between 1618 and 1619 he was Camerlengo. From 1626 to 1629 was Ginnasi Bishop of Palestrina and from 1629 to 1630 Bishop of Porto e Santa Rufina. He was from 1630 until his death, Dean of the Sacred College and Bishop of Ostia. Ginnasi died of gout. He is buried in the chapel of Santa Maria sopra Minerva.

Ginnasis former palace located in Rome at the corner of Via dell ' Arco di Ginnasi and Via delle Botteghe Oscure and was restored in 1936. On Castelbolognese the Collegio Ginnasi was created.
