Intersection of Ahmer Bou Amer ( Flame Tokay) (?) × Ribier (syn. Alphonse- Lavallée )

Cardinal is a red grape variety. After previous assumption, it was a between Ahmer Bou Amer (also called Flame Tokay ) and Ribier (syn. Alphonse- Lavallée ). In 2007, however, A genetic study showed that with Ahmer Bou Amer may be no relationship. In 2009, finally, the intersection Alphonse- Lavallée was determined x Queen of the vineyards. The crossing was made in 1939 by Elmer Snyder and FN Harmon in Fresno, California.

It is in Spain (about 5,800 hectares ), Italy ( 3,800 hectares ), Romania ( 3,800 hectares ) and Bulgaria (about 2,000 acres ) cultivated, where it is one of the main table grapes. The variety was crossing partner in the new varieties Blanc Du Bois, Carina, Diana, Flame Seedless and Zagore. In Italy, an early ripening mutation called Cardinal Early arose.
