The Earth - sedge ( Carex humilis ) is a plant from the family of Sedge family ( Cyperaceae ). It is also called Dwarf Sedge Sedge or Low. The botanical name ( humilis = on earth) refers to the low stalk.

Description

The Earth - sedge is a perennial, herbaceous plant, forming dense clumps. The upright stalks are five to 15 inches high and are weakly triangular. The basal leaves with purple leaf sheaths are 10 to 25 inches long and about an inch wide. They are usually rolled borstlich, stiff and gray or light green color.

The male rusty brown and white pied spikelets is terminal and about one centimeter in length. Among them, often over two inches away, two or three brown -silver shining female spikelets are two to four flowers. The pale red-brown, shiny bracts are often over an inch long.

The inverted egg-shaped, three-sided fruit hoses to three millimeters long and are about as long as the rounded, often stachelspitzigen, breithautrandigen husks.

The flowering period is from April to May

This species is widespread in the heat zones of Eurasia, especially in the south and south-east Europe. In Germany, from the lowlands to the foothills (up to 1,500 m ) scattered to the north and northeast rare. In Austria, the Pannonian region frequently, otherwise scattered to rare.

As the lime-loving plant location preferred dry warm skimmed lawn, grass steppes and pine forests.
