Careysburg District

Region

Careysburg is a city in the east of the West African Republic of Liberia, she was named after the Baptist minister, physician and founding member of the American Colonization Society (ACS), Lott Carey, named and located near the capital Monrovia.

History

The Montserrado County belonging to the city was founded in 1859 by incoming settlers from the United States and the Caribbean island of Barbados. Located in the hinterland location was chosen to counteract the high mortality rate of the settlers, caused by yellow fever and malaria. The region around Careysburg quickly formed a center of plantation economy ( rubber and coffee). In Careysburg is a railway station, near the city of Mount Coffee Dam and the White Plains Water Treatment Plant was built.

Near Careysburg was operated a broadcasting station Voice of America from 1964. Built as a health center of the Firestone plantation in Careysburg Duside Hospital meets European standards of medical care.
