CarGoTram

The CarGoTram is a cargo tram, which operates the Dresden Transport AG on the net tram Dresden. It is funded by the Volkswagen AG, to supply the transparent factory with components produced there for the series VW Phaeton and the Bentley Flying Spur.

History

Already during the planning of the Volkswagen plant, the question arose, how should happen to the transport of the individual components for the car from the logistics center at Dresden- Friedrichstadt station to the Transparent Factory. Because the route runs right through the city and they wanted to avoid the transport of the components by truck, it was decided to build two cargo trams.

On 3 March 2000, these two trains were given at the Schalke ironworks in Gelsenkirchen in order. A road freight train then cost around 6.5 million German marks. Within less than a year as a five-part road freight train was newly designed and constructed. A special feature is that reconditioned motor bogies were used already retired Tatra trams in the vehicles. In this way, no new bogies for the special track width had 1450 mm, which is the Dresden tram network is based, are made (see the standard gauge with only 1435 mm).

On 16 November 2000 the first vehicle in the Dresden tram depot Trachenberge was officially presented. On 3 January 2001, the railway initial tests completed on the Dresden railway network. Since 2001, the cargo tram runs every hour ( two trains ) between the logistics center in Friedrichstadt and the Transparent Factory.

Technology

The cargo tram is designed as a bidirectional vehicle with driving car front and rear. All axles are driven. A complete train can carry up to three truckloads, which corresponds to a load volume of 214 cubic meters.

Five-section road freight train

The maximum load is per train:

The control car received the numbers from 2001 to 2005 and the middle car, the numbers from 2021 to 2027 (The numbers 2005 and 2027 are a substitute for the other numbers, so in 2005 as a replacement for the control car from 2001 to 2004 and 2027 to replace the intermediate cars 2021 to 2026 ).
