Carl Anderson (art director)

Carl Anderson ( born June 13, 1903 in Dover, New Jersey, † September 22, 1989 in North Hollywood, California ) was an American art director and production designer.

Life

Carl Anderson and his family moved to Los Angeles, where he attended high school. After graduating, he worked for an interior designer. In the early 1930s he went to MGM as a draftsman. In 1936 he moved to Columbia Pictures, where he remained for 25 years.

It was not long before Anderson became the Art Director. First, he gained experience in short films. In the early 1940s he also worked for long movies. He was twice nominated for an Academy Award for Best Production Design. The first nomination was in 1960. Along with William Kiernan, he was nominated for work on The wrath of the righteous. In 1973, a nomination with Reg Allen for Lady Sings the Blues. The rest of his career spent Anderson primarily in television, before he retired in 1981.

At over 100 productions he was involved as a production designer and art director, so among other things to the movies Purgatory (1953 ), A Raisin in the Sun ( 1960), Hatari! (1962 ), Summer of Expectation (1963 ), gold case (1965 ), Robin Crusoe, the Amazon chieftain (1966 ), El Dorado (1966 ), 100 Rifles (1969 ), The Undefeated (1969 ), Chisum (1970 ), Big Jake (1971) and cactus Jack (1979). In television, he worked on several episodes of the Western series Bonanza.
