Carl August Haupt

Carl August Haupt ( born August 28, 1810 in Kuhnau / Silesia, † July 4, 1891 in Berlin) was a German organist, music teacher and composer.

Life

Main was constructed 1827-1830 in Berlin from August Wilhelm Bach, Bernhard Klein and Siegfried Dehn organist and worked, among other things at the parish church (Berlin) from 1848 until his death. He earned a reputation as an outstanding organist and in 1869 successor August Wilhelm Bach as director of the Royal Institute for Church Music, where he taught as a professor. The first professor of music in the United States, John Knowles Paine, studied in Berlin at the main organ, counterpoint and composition. Main wrote an organ school, an organ chorale book and composed numerous songs. Of his compositions for organ only his great C major Fugue and Two Chorales are preserved. Main has also edited the organ works of his deceased friend Carl Ludwig Thiele.
