Carl D. Keith

Carl Donald Keith (* May 29, 1920 in Stewart Creek, West Virginia; † November 9, 2008 in New Bern, North Carolina ) was an American chemist and together with John J. Mooney co-inventor of the three-way catalyst.

Life and work

Carl D. Keith graduated from Salem College in Winston- Salem, North Carolina in 1943. After studying chemistry at the University of Indiana, where he graduated with the master, he moved to DePaul University, where he received his doctorate in 1947. He began his career as a chemist at the Sinclair Oil Company. In 1957 he moved to Engelhard Corporation, where he served as Chairman retired in 1985.

Among his greatest accomplishments included the development of the three-way catalyst with John J. Mooney in the 1970s. In 2002 he was for his services, the National Medal of Technology awarded.
