Carl Erwin Walz ( born September 6, 1955 in Cleveland, Ohio, USA ) is a former American astronaut.

Roll 1977, he received a bachelor's degree in physics from Kent State University in Ohio in 1979 and a master's degree in solid state physics from John Carroll University in Ohio. From 1979 to 1982 he was on the McClellan Air Force Base responsible for the analysis of radioactive samples from the Atomic Energy Detection System. The following year, he was trained as a flight test engineer at the Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base and worked there until 1990.

Astronauts activity

Carl Walz was selected in January 1990 with the 13th astronaut group.

STS -51

On September 12, 1993, he started with the discovery in the mission STS -51 on its first flight into space. He sat there from the Advanced Communications Technology Satellite ( ACTS) and the Shuttle Pallet Satellite ( ORFEUS -SPAS ). The latter had American and German scientific experiments including an ultraviolet spectrometer on board. In a seven-hour spacewalk proven Walz and his colleague James Newman tools and methods to repair the Hubble Space Telescope. After ORFEUS -SPAS was flown free for six days and thereby about 65 km away from the Discovery had, he was finally captured with the help of the shuttle robotic arm again. After 158 orbits around Earth, the Discovery landed the first shuttle in the night at the Kennedy Space Center.

STS -65

For the STS- 65 he flew aboard the space shuttle Columbia on July 8, 1994 in space. Around seven dozen experiments in the fields of biology and materials science were during the 15-day Spacelab flight on the program. On July 23, he landed at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

STS -79

STS -79 was launched on 16 September 1996 Mir Space Station from Kennedy Space Center, where the mission ended again later. The Space Shuttle Atlantis was docked four days at the space station. In this mission, the Mir crew member Shannon Lucid, John Blaha of which flew back with STS -81 was replaced. After the exchange of supplies and experiments, the mission returned to Earth on 26 September 1996. The flight lasted 10 days, 3 hours and 19 minutes.

ISS Expedition 4

Recently started rolling on December 5, 2001 as a flight engineer of the fourth long-term occupation together with Yuri and Daniel Bursch Onufrienko with the Space Shuttle Endeavour (STS -108 ) to the International Space Station (ISS). On 14 January 2002 roll undertook together with Onufrienko a spacewalk and moved it to the cargo boom for the Russian Strela crane from PMA -1 coupling adapter to the exterior of Pirs docking of the module. In addition, an amateur radio antenna was at the end of the Zvezda module installed ( ARISS project). This spacewalk lasted six hours and three minutes. With 5 hours and 49 minutes only slightly shorter was the next spacewalk, the roll undertook together with fellow on 20 February 2002. The Quest airlock has been tested and prepared for future exits. Another highlight of the ISS Expedition 4 was the visit of the space shuttle Atlantis in April 2002. This mission (STS- 110), the grid element S0 was brought and installed to the ISS. After a flight time of 195 days, 19 hours and 39 minutes rolling returned on board the Space Shuttle Endeavour mission STS -111 on 19 June 2002 back to Earth. Bursch and Walz held so that by 2007 the record for the longest single U.S. spaceflight.

According to the NASA

Roll left NASA on 5 December 2008 to take a job in the industry.
