Carl Ebert

Carl Anton Ebert ( born February 20, 1887 in Berlin, † 14 May 1980, Santa Monica, California ) was a German actor, director and theater manager.

Life

Ebert completed a drama degree at Max Reinhardt. Following this he was engaged at different stages as an actor and played in numerous film and television productions (see Filmography ). It was founded in 1927 opera director and artistic director at the Staatstheater Darmstadt, before he went in the same capacity in 1931 at the German Opera Berlin and filled that post until 1933. After the seizure of power by the Nazis he was defamed by the Nazi cultural community as "music - Bolshevik ". Ebert emigrated via Switzerland and England to Turkey in 1948, he moved to the United States.

In England, Ebert teamed up with Fritz Busch Glyndebourne Festival, where he worked until 1939, and again in the 50s as its director. In 1939 he moved to Ankara, where he played a leading role in building up the state conservatory and the State Theatre. His assistant in this period was the writer Sabahattin Ali.

Ebert ran from 1948 to 1954, the Institute of opera at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. From 1954 to 1961 he was re-appointed as Director at the German Opera Berlin. Following his local directorship Ebert remained as a director of the Deutsche Oper still connected.

Family

Carl Ebert was the father of the German - British opera director Peter Ebert ( 1918-2012 ).

His grandson Alex Ebert is head of the U.S. band Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros.
