Life

Born in 1849 in the southern Swedish city of Lund University, Hill studied against the wishes of his father at the Stockholm Academy of Fine Arts painting and continued his studies in France, where he lived for several years and worked. Inspired by the Barbizon school, and especially by the example of Corot's he painted mostly landscapes at this time.

In 1878 he got, with only 28 years after the death of his father and a sister a severe psychosis. After several years of hospitalization, he returned back to Lund in 1883 and was looked up to his death by his mother and his sister. During this time his important collection of drawings was created.

In his last years, Hill suffered from hallucinations and paranoia, which is also reflected in his drawings. Seven paintings and numerous drawings from his estate are in the archives of the Malmö Art Museum. One of his pictures exhibited in the Swedish National Museum.
