Carl Friedrich Keil

Carl Friedrich Keil (actually Johann Friedrich Karl Keil, born February 26, 1807 in Lauterbach at Oelsnitz; † May 5, 1888 in Rödlitz at Lichtenstein ) was one of Germany's most important Protestant theologian with an emphasis on Old Testament exegesis in the 19th century.

Wedge came from a poor family of craftsmen. In 1821 he emigrated to St. Petersburg, where he wanted to learn the carpenter 's craft from his uncle. Because of his weak constitution him but by his uncle a visit to the German Petri school was made possible, and he received due to its good performance for a scholarship to study theology, first at Dorpat, then in Berlin, where he became a student of Ernst Wilhelm Hengstenberg.

1833 Keil began his career at the Theological Faculty of Dorpat, where he was an associate professor with 31 years, and 25 years teaching Old and New Testament exegesis and oriental languages. After his retirement he moved to Leipzig in 1859, where he also worked on his masterpiece: the book edited by Franz Delitzsch Biblical Commentary on the Old Testament. This commentary on the Bible was translated into English and placed well over 100 years, again and again in North America.

Wedge works were those of a deeply Christian theologians, who sought, with its profound historical and philological knowledge after a full understanding of biblical texts and, after a defense of God's Word against biblical criticism theses.
