Carl Gustav Calwer

Carl Gustav Calw ( born November 11, 1821 in Stuttgart, † August 19, 1874 in Stuttgart- Berg) was a German forester, ornithologist and entomologist.

Life

Calwers father was Hofkaminfeger. Carl Gustav Calw attended a grammar school and then to a trade school. After a forest science studies with a PhD, he completed an internship in 1847 first am Ammersee and was then forest assistant in Neuenbürg in Pforzheim, New town on the cooker at Heilbronn and Ellwangen ( Jagst). In 1871 he was forester in the Forest Office Sulz am Neckar near Rottweil.

Services

Ornithology

For Ornithology Württemberg he published, for example, in 1847 an essay entitled On the social Brüteplätze of native birds, 1853 About the first particular case of the occurrence of Otis Tetrax in Württemberg. With the hope to contribute to a complete German ornithological Idiotikon, he published in 1853 a list of popular bird names Württemberg.

Entomology

From his beetle book that appeared in 1858 for the first time, there were six updated to 1916 conditions. The first edition was produced in collaboration with the physician and zoologist Gustav Jäger, who also oversaw the reprints after Calwers death in 1874. To date, find the more than 1,000 beetle drawings from the book using that in the artistic institution of Emil Hochdanz; had been given in Stuttgart in order ( * 1816 † 1885).
