Carl Gyllenhielm

Baron Carl Carlsson Gyllenhielm (* March 4, 1574, † March 17, 1650 ) was a Swedish Field Marshal, politician and Reich Admiral. He was an illegitimate son of Charles IX. and his mistress Karin Nilsdotter and therefore the half- brother of King Gustav II Adolf.

First military experience gained Gyllenhielm from 1601 in the war against Poland. For Gustav II Adolf, he built from the Swedish fleet and organized the king landing in Riga ( 1621) and Pomerania (1630 ) and the blockade of Danzig ( 1626 ). Gyllenhielm created in 1634 an Admiralty College ( Amiralitetskollegium ), the actual command of the fleet but had the admirals Clas Larsson Fleming (up to 1644) and Erik Eriksson Ryning ( nephew of the former kingdom of Admiral Axel Ryning ). With the help of Dutch Swedish fleet 1644/45 Denmark defeated in Torstenssonkrieg.

In Gyllenhielms tenure as Reich Admiral but also fell in 1627 a Seeniederlage against Poland and in 1628 the battle and inglorious loss of the flagship Vasa.
