Carl Heissler

Carl Heissler (born 18 January 1823 in Vienna, † November 13, 1878 ) was an Austrian violinist and violist.

Life

Carl Heissler received his education at Georg Hellmesberger senior, Matthias Durst and Joseph Böhm at the Conservatory of the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna. In 1841 he entered the service of the Court Opera Orchestra and played from 1843 in the court orchestra, first as a substitute, since 1860 as a full member. From 1849 he played second violin in the quartet Leopold Jansa. Josef Hellmesberger, a son of his professor, also founded a quartet, for which he hiring away Jansa musicians, including Carl Heissler. He called the new ensemble Hellmesberger Quartet.

Heissler taught in the Conservatory of the Society of Friends of Music; among his students were Ernst Reiterer, Julius Winkler, Arnold Rosé, Hans Wessely, Eugene Gruenberg, Hans Richter and Franz Schalk. In 1869, he became the first director of the orchestra of the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna. His successor in 1871 was Anton Rubinstein, the replaced the following year Johannes Brahms.
