Carl Johan Thyselius

Carl Johan Thyselius ( born June 8, 1811 in Österhaninge, Haninge municipality, † 11 January 1891 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish politician and Prime Minister of Sweden ( Sveriges Statsminister ).

Study and career

The son of the future bishop Pehr Thyselius first completed since 1827 to study at the University of Uppsala. Like many other personalities of his time, he combined his professional career with political activities. First, he took over some responsibilities within the administration of justice before he ( Högsta domstolen ) 1856-1860 Richter ( Justitieråd ) at the Supreme Court of Sweden was.

After a first job as a cabinet minister, he later became president from 1864 to 1875 the Department of Law, Finance and Administration ( Kammarkollegiet ), the oldest public institution in Sweden.

Political career

Thyselius began his political career on 2 November 1860 the acquisition of the Office of Church Minister ( Ecklesiastikminister ), which, however, perceived the duties of a Minister of Education. This office he held until 1863 under the Co- Prime Minister Louis De Geer and Ludvig Manderstrom.

From 1863 to 1864 he was then President of the Government of the District of Kronoberg. This district he represented also from 1868 to 1886 as a deputy in the First Chamber of the Diet.

In 1875 he came under the Co- Prime Ministers De Geer and Oscar Björnstjerna again in the government and took over the lead time of the Civil Department (Civil Minister ), which is responsible for trade, industry and shipping. This office he retained even after the government reform of 1876, which meant that De Geer sole first became Prime Minister. Along with De Geer he was subsequently abandoned on 19 April 1880 by his office.

Following the resignation of De Geers successor Arvid Posse on 13 June 1883, he took over at the request of King Oscar II himself the office of Prime Minister. At times, he also took back the management of the civil ministry. He was the first Chief Minister, who is not from the nobility, and at the same time with 72 years of hitherto oldest Prime Minister of Sweden.

On 16 May 1884 he came back but then after only eleven months reign.
