Carl Johannes Thomae

Carl Johannes Thomae ( born December 11, 1840 in Laucha, † April 1, 1921 in Jena ) was a German mathematician.

Life

Thomae, son of Karl August Thomae ( headmaster ) and Emilie Gutsmuths, grew up in Lauchagrund on the Unstrut and in 1864 received his doctorate. 1866 Thomae habilitated at the University of Göttingen and a year later in 1867 at the University of Halle.

In 1874 Thomae Anna Uhde married in Balgstädt near his birthplace Laucha. Their son, Walter Thomae was born a year later on November 5, 1875, but died Thomaes Woman 5 days after the birth of her son. Thomae 1879 became a full professor at the University of Jena. 1892 married Sophie Thomae Pröpper second marriage in Jena. A year later, Susan Thomae was born. 1914 joined Thomae - at that time Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Jena - in retirement and died after a short illness in 1921 in Jena.

Carl Johannes Thomaes research focused mainly on the theory of functions and the epsilontics. According to him the thoma ash function is named. He described himself as a Riemann -student, even though he never attended lectures Riemann.
