Carl Kress

Carl Kress ( born October 20, 1907 in Newark, New Jersey, † June 10, 1965 in Reno, Nevada) was an American jazz guitarist of the Oldtime Jazz and Swing. He belongs with Eddie Lang of the pioneers of jazz guitar.

Life and work

Carl Kress began his career in 1926 at the Little Ramblers and Orchestra by Paul Whiteman and in 1927 was a jazz guitarist as he. During recordings of Bix Beiderbecke, Miff Mole, the Dorsey Brothers, Frankie Trumbauer and Adrian Rollini participated He also took up guitar duets, especially with Eddie Lang ( Feeling My Way, Pickin ' My Way 1933) and Dick McDonough ( Danzon and Stage Fright, 1934). During this time, Kress was also part owner of the legendary Onyx Club on 52nd Street in New York. In the 1930s, Kress worked primarily in radio stations; later he also worked for television. In addition, Kress took records with Muggsy Spanier, 1944 Pee Wee Russell 1945, Bobby Hackett and Tommy Dorsey in 1949 and Pearl Bailey. He also worked at the Gordon Jenkins Orchestra as a companion of Louis Armstrong and played banjo in a trio of Clarence Hutch Rider. He died while touring with George Barnes of a heart attack.
