Carl Lebrecht Udo Dammer

Carl Lebrecht Udo Dammer ( born January 8, 1860 in Apolda, † November 15, 1920 in United Rambin at Kolberg ) was a German botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Damme ".

Life

Udo Dammer was the eldest child of the chemist Otto Dammer. He worked as a curator at the Botanical Garden in St. Petersburg from 1883 to 1886 and then studied botany in Berlin, where he also served ( 1887-1889 ) Assistant of Nathanael Pringsheim. In 1888 he received his doctorate at the University of Freiburg; the title of his dissertation was contributions to the knowledge of the vegetative organs of Limnobium stoloniferum Grisebach.

From 1893 to 1919 he was curator of the Botanical Garden in Berlin. He also developed a lively publishing activity (see below). Therefore, he was awarded with patent of 21 December 1905 by the Prussian Minister of Culture of the title of professor.

In his last years he lived mainly on his estate at Karlsruh Battin. There he was also buried, after he was killed in a traffic accident. His wife Elisabeth, née Schrabach, with whom he had two sons, survived him by six years.

Ehrentaxon

According to him, the carpet cotoneaster ( Cotoneaster dammeri ) received from the kind of Zwergmispeln the epithet of the scientific name.

In addition, it was named in honor the genus Dammera K.Schum. & Lauterb. Plant the palm family ( Arecaceae ) named.
