Carl Magnus von Hell

Carl Magnus von Hell ( * September 8, 1849, † December 11, 1926 ) was a German chemist.

Life

He studied in Stuttgart at Hermann Fehling and in Munich under Richard Erlenmeyer. After 1870/71 his military service, he worked as an assistant in the chemical laboratory. 1877 his son Bernhard Hell, who later educational reformer and founder of the Urspringschule was born. 1881 Bright described a reaction which is known as the Hell-Volhard - Zelinsky reaction today. In 1883 he was appointed to Stuttgart, as successor Fehling, professor of experimental chemistry and theoretical chemistry. ( Since 1862, Karl Marx, Friedrich ( 1832-1890 ) Professor of Chemical Engineering. ) In 1889 he succeeded in the synthesis of the hitherto longest hydrocarbon ( with 60 carbon atoms). With his colleague Wilhelm Dietrich he led the 1893-1895 realized their new institution. In 1914 he retired due to an eye condition.

Ceremony, ennoblement

Carl von Hell in 1906 awarded the Cross of Honor of the Order of the Württemberg Crown, which was connected with the personal titles of nobility.
