Carl Marstrander

Carl Johan Sverdrup Marstrander (* November 26, 1883 in Kristiansand, Norway, † December 23, 1965 in Oslo) was a Norwegian Keltologe and Indo-Europeanist, germanistischer medievalist, linguist and researcher runes. He was Professor of Celtic Studies at the University of Christiania in Oslo.

Marstrander comes from middle-class family, his father Frederik was a school principal, his mother was Christiane Henriette (nee Brodtkorb Sverdrup ). He made his Abitur in 1902 in his birthplace and home town and moved afterwards to 1903 to a non-commissioned officer school of the Norwegian Armed Forces.

From 1903 to 1907 he studied in Oslo Classical Philology, Indo-European and Celtic language, among others at Sophus Bugge and Alf Torp. As part of his Celtic studies led him in 1907 a study visit to the island of Ireland Great Blasket. In 1908 he received a scholarship for comparative linguistics and from 1909 to 1913, he was appointed to a professorship of Celtic and comparative linguistics at the School of Irish Learning in Dublin. From 1913, he held in Oslo a personally designed for him chair of Celtic philology until his retirement in 1953. During this time Marstrander had from 1919 to 1922 a further study in Brittany, France.

Research and teaching areas Marstranders were next to the Indo-European and Celtic Studies ( Old Irish language, Celtic- Italic and Celtic- Norse language contacts ) the Germanic languages, especially the Gothic, Old High German and Old Saxon philology and the runology. Academic students are Marstranders: Hjalmar Borg Tram, Ottar Grønvik, Gerd Høst, Magne Oftedal.
