Carl Nixon

Carl Nixon (born 1967 in Christchurch ) is a New Zealand author of novels, short stories and dramas. He adapted Lloyd Jones ' novel The Book of Fame and JM Coetzee's disgrace to the theater. He won many prizes with his works, among others, the Katherine Mansfield Short Story Contest. 2007 Nixon was the Ursula Bethell / Creative New Zealand Writer in Residence at the University of Canterbury. There he completed his first novel, Rocking Horse Road. In addition, he wrote numerous plays for children.

Carl Nixon has a master's degree in theology from the University of Canterbury. In 1993, he taught for one year English at the Linwood High School in Christchurch. He then spent two years in Japan and taught there also. Since 1997 he has concentrated on his literary activities. He alternates between dramas - both comedies and tragedies -, short stories and novels.

Nixon won many awards for his short stories and was often on the short list ( short list). He twice won the Sunday Star Times Short Story Competition for My Father Running with a Dead Boy (1997) and Weight (1999). In 2007 he won the prestigious Katherine Mansfield Short Story Contest. His collection of short stories Fish'n Chip Shop Song ( Random House, 2006) made ​​it to the shortlist for the 2007 Commonwealth Writers' Prize in the category "Best First Book South East Asia and South Pacific region."

2006, during his time as Ursula Bethell / Creative New Zealand Writer in Residence, Carl Nixon completed his first novel, Rocking Horse Road. This was published by Random House in 2007, as did his second novel, Settler's Creek ( 2010).

Nixon's activities in the area include the dramatic adaptations of Lloyd Jones ' novel The Book of Fame and Shame of the novel by Nobel Prize winner JM Coetzee. His plays The Raft and The Birthday Boy was first performed in 2007 and 2008 respectively at the Court Theatre and has since produced across the country. His latest piece Two Fish 'n ' a Scoop had its premiere in October 2010 at the Court Theatre. In addition, Nixon wrote several plays for children, including The Little Mermaid (2000), The Reluctant Dragon ( 2000) and The Beauty and the Beast ( 2000). He also published a young adult novel entitled Guardians of Mother Earth (1997).

A German translation of Nixon's novel, Rocking Horse Road was released in late July 2012 at Weidle publisher. In September 2013 his second novel Settlers Creek is also published in German translation in Weidle publisher.
