Carl Rosa

Carl Rosa ( born March 22, 1842 in Hamburg, † April 30, 1889 in Paris) was a British conductor, theater director and German descent.

Life

Carl Rosa, who grew up under the name of Karl August Nikolaus Rose, the son of a merchant in his native city of Hamburg, studied music at the conservatory in Leipzig, then in 1862 in Paris. 1863, the young violinist was already appointed in his German hometown for the concertmaster. Three years later he joined successfully as a soloist at the Crystal Palace in London, but had also a conductor both in England and in the United States professional success. There he met the Scottish soprano Euphrosyne Parepa (1836-1874), which appeared under the pseudonym Madame Parepa Pink, and married her in 1867 in New York. Two years later, the couple founded in New York Parepa Rosa English Opera Company and toured with him for three seasons by the states, where the Star Parepa and Carl was the conductor. Both merit was that first came the " Grand Opera " in provincial towns where the musical art had not previously been present. In 1872, Rosa and his wife returned to England, named their touring theater into Carl Rosa Opera Company and toured the UK and Ireland. In the following 15 years, ideas exchanged in the province with periods at prominent places such as the Drury Lane Theatre in London. Pink led many in England at that time still unknown operas the audience, and employs a number of at the time outstanding singers.

The company was also after his sudden death on, survived the period of the First World War, but had to go into liquidation in 1920. Through several mergers with other companies, however, it survived until its merger with Sadlers ' Wells Opera in 1985. The company was when Carl Rosa Opera Limited established in 1997 under the artistic direction of Peter Mulloy back to life.

The grave of Carl Rosa is located in Highgate Cemetery in London.
