Carl Schmidt (chemist)

Carl Ernst Heinrich Schmidt (born 1 Junijul / June 13 1822greg in Jelgava, .. .. † 27 Februarjul / March 11 1894greg in Dorpat ) was a Russian physician and chemist deutschbaltischer descent.

Schmidt was born the son of a pharmacist in Jelgava in Kurland, which is now part of Latvia Jelgava. He began teaching in 1838 a pharmacist in Berlin and studied chemistry and medicine. He received his doctorate in 1844 at the Justus Liebig in Giessen Dr. phil. with a thesis on plant mucilages and 1845 at the University of Göttingen as a doctor of medicine. After studying in Germany Schmidt worked at the Military Medical Academy in St. Petersburg, passed the Russian doctor exam and also authored two other dissertations to acquire Russian doctoral degrees. In 1847 he was a lecturer in physiological and pathological chemistry at the University of Tartu ( Dorpat ). He was promoted in 1850 to associate professor of Pharmacy and Head of the Pharmaceutical Institute. In 1852 he became a full professor of medical chemistry. In 1878, Wilhelm Ostwald received his doctorate in his working group.

Schmidt was interested initially mainly for medical issues. He achieved a first detailed analysis of the composition of various body fluids, as blood and bile. Together with Max von Pettenkofer, he is also the founder of the Metabolic Research. Schmidt realized that hydrochloric acid is a component of the gastric acid, and examined their interactions with pepsin. Later, his main interest was the geochemistry of the deposits of peat, phosphorite, guano, natural gas and oil in the Baltic States, Russia and Siberia.
