Carl Stone

Carl Stone ( born February 10, 1953 in Los Angeles ) is an American composer.

Stone studied at the California Institute of the Arts composition with Morton Subottnik and James Tenney. Since 1972 he has devoted himself to composition electro-acoustic live plants.

1984 Stone was commissioned to compose a work that premiered at the Olympic Arts Festival in San Francisco and has been used in the same year by the choreographer Bill T. Jones for the production 1-2-3. In 1989, he was talking to a grant from the Asian Cultural Council to six months in Japan. In the same year was commissioned by the Museum of Contemporary Art as part of the broadcast production Territory of Art the composition Thonbury.

In 1990, he wrote the music for the one-hour ZDF broadcast Made in Hollywood. With commissions from Michiko Akao and Sumire Yoshihara, he received awards at the International Electric Cinema Festival in Switzerland. Paul Dresher Ensemble For he composed in 1993 Ruen Pair.

For the String Plus Festival 1994 in Kobe Mae Ploy was for string quartet and electronics. For Takashi Harada and Aki Takahashi he composed in the same year Banh Mi So for Ondes Martenot and piano. On behalf of NTT in 1995 Yam Vun Sen, a work for the Internet arose.

1996 Stone wrote with support from the Rockefeller Foundation, the music for Noh project the choreographer June Watanabe and Nohmeisters Anshin Uchida. For the festivities marking the 100th anniversary of Henry Cowell at the University of California, Berkeley in 1997, he composed Sa Rit Gol for Disklavier. In 1998 he wrote the music for Exusiai, a performance by the Butohmeisters Akira Kasai.

Stone was from 1981 to 1997 director of Meet the Composer / California and 1992-1955 President of the American Music Center.
