Carlo Alberto Castigliano

Carlo Alberto Castigliano ( born November 8, 1847 in Asti, † October 25, 1884 in Milan ) was an Italian architect, engineer and scientist.

Life

He came from very modest circumstances, and lost his parents before he left school. He earned his first money with book translations and tutoring. He exercised the profession of a teacher of the mechanics of 1867-1870 in Terni and then attended from 1870-1873 Polytechnic Institute in Turin. After a study period of three years ( engineering and mathematics ), he received his diploma as an engineer prematurely.

He formulated a well-known theorem of engineering mechanics, the set of Castigliano, which is used for deformation calculation in statically indeterminate systems. The set is suitable for the calculation of any generally loaded statically indeterminate systems and the calculation of deformation parameters on certain (discrete) points and has been in the Structural Engineering Mechanics substantial importance in the calculation of the bend.

Set of Castigliano

The set consists of several parts and essentially says: " The partial derivative of the strain energy of a load group after a single load provides the assigned shift. "
