Carlo Bergonzi (luthier)

Carlo ( I) Bergonzi ( baptized December 21, 1683 in Cremona, † February 9, 1747 ) was an Italian luthier.

Life and work

About Bergonzis youth apprenticeship and little is known. A long time he was considered a student of Jerome ( II ) Amati, but also a lesson or a journeyman with Antonio Stradivari was adopted, such as through the Hills, 1902. These withdrew the opinion, however, in their Guarneri book of 1931 and arranged Bergonzi now Giuseppe Giovanni Guarneri ' filius Andreae ' as a mentor to. Recent literature calls Vincenzo Rugeri as a teacher; with one of his violins 1710 - 1715 have early work of Bergonzi significant similarities, the " Thibaud " (about 1715-1725 ). Care and elegance of his early work pointing in the direction of Stradivari, Guarneri del Gesu later on. From the late 1720s some cooperation with Stradivari begins.

His works are rare, different and possibly signed ' relabelled ' early. A total of 47 violins, 1 viola and 2 cellos are now recognized from his hand. The first signed instruments are from 1720; the period from about 1730 to 1740 is regarded as his best. After his sons Michele Angelo and Zosimo have cooperated. His violins have predominantly one-piece, gorgeous flamed maple floors of high-quality, mostly smaller sizes ( body length up to 35.3 cm), but large string length and scale length ( Körpermensur - stop - often about 197-198 mm, mainly due to the form and position of the f-holes ). In 1746, Bergonzi took over the house and the workshop of Stradivari with some unfinished instruments.

Carlo Bergonzi is one next to Antonio Stradivari, Amati and Giuseppe Guarneri Nicola 'del Gesu ' to the top class of the historic Italian violin making. This is also reflected in the financial appreciation of his instruments, are obtained for the highest amounts at auctions. They are mostly in private collections. Some were played by famous violinist, so the " Kreisler " of about 1733 - 1735 (Fritz Kreisler and Itzhak Perlman ), the " Salabue " of 1733 ( Johanna Martzy ) and the " D' Aranyi, Fachiri " of 1733 (Jelly d ' Aranyi ).

Other violin makers of the family were:

  • Michele Angelo (ca. 1722-1758 Cremona ), son and pupil of Carlo I.
  • Zosimo (ca. 1725 - after 1777), son and probably pupil of Carlo I.
  • Nicola (after 1746 - after 1796 ) son and pupil of Michele Angelo
  • Carlo II (1757 - 1838 Cremona ), son of Zosimo
