Carlo Cozio

Carlo Cozio, Count of Montiglio and Salabue (* circa 1715 in Casale Monferrato, † around 1780) was an Italian chess player and author.

Chess Author

Carlo Cozio was known for his chess book Il giuoco degli scacchi. The already in 1740, completed in manuscript in two volumes appeared in 1766 in Turin.

In the view of opening up Cozio concentrated, starting from its predecessor Gioachino Greco, and in particular the King's Gambit. Like him, he did not provide the listed variants with additional comments. Unlike the other chess Italian authors of the 18th century was followed by Cozio with regard to the rules of chess Greco also in the preference of the (modern) limited castling. He knew this but with the condition that no castling attacked by the enemy stone or chess should be offered. The second volume contains more than two hundred playoffs or studies.

After Cozio a rarely played variation of the Ruy Lopez is named, the 1.e2 -e4 e7 - e5 -f3 2.Sg1 Sb8 - c6 - b5 3.Lf1 Ng8 - e7 arises after the moves (ECO code: C60).
