Carlo Furno

Cardinal Carlo Furno ( born December 2, 1921 in Bairo Canavese, Province of Turin, Italy) is a retired cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church and Cardinal Grand Master Emeritus of the Equestrian Order of the Holy grave in Jerusalem.

Life

Carlo Furno studied in Rome, the subjects philosophy, Catholic theology and law. He received his doctorate in both canon law and in civil law and received on 25 June 1944, the sacrament of Holy Orders. He then worked for three years as a parish pastor in the diocese of Ivrea, before he was released for the purpose of further studies. After its completion, he entered the diplomatic service of the Vatican. From 1953 to 1957 he was attaché and secretary of the Apostolic Nunciature in Colombia and Ecuador, from 1957 to 1962 he was secretary of the Apostolic Delegation in Jerusalem.

From 1962 to 1973 Carlo Furno worked in the First Section of the Vatican Secretariat of State, and took from 1966 also a lecturer at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy.

1973 Pope Paul VI appointed him. Titular Archbishop of Abari and Apostolic Nuncio in Peru. The bishop ordained Carlo Furno on September 16, 1973 Cardinal Paolo Bertoli. From 1978 to 1982 he was Apostolic Nuncio in Lebanon, from 1982 to 1992, he provided the same task in Brazil. He was Apostolic Nuncio to Italy in 1992. Pope John Paul II took him on 26 November 1994 as a cardinal deacon with the title Diakonia Sacro Cuore di Cristo Re in the College of Cardinals, and put him in the following years a number of occasions the line Pontifical delegations.

He also appointed him on 21 December 1995 on the Cardinal Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy grave in Jerusalem, and in 1997 the archpriest of the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. On 24 February 2005, he was initially retaining its title diakonia, which was charged pro hac vice to title church, a cardinal priest. In 2006, he finally opted for the titular church of S. Onofrio.

The Office of the Archpriest Furno practiced until his age-related retirement in 2004. His resignation as the Cardinal Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy grave in Jerusalem, Pope Benedict XVI. on 27 June 2007.

At the conclave Conclave 2005 and 2013 he did not participate, as he has the age limit of 80 years already passed.
